Carmel College go bananas for Fairtrade
Stacey Griffiths, Media & Comms Volunteer, reports on her college's hugely successful Fairtrade Fortnight
Carmel College went bananas for Fairtrade
“Fairtrade Fortnight at Carmel College in St Helens was a huge success!
It was a fortnight packed with events to promote fairtrade and to give a big push to the college gaining fairtrade status.
In order to promote the wider range of fairtrade items available, we branched out to a newly formed business called ‘Afrika gifts’ who sell fairtrade gifts made by craftsmen and women in many African countries. This was a big hit with students and staff, and as a result they have agreed to return to the college each month.
We also had a fundraising cake sale organised by students and a fairtrade food stall brought in by a group from our local parish.

The main event was a bananathon! We successfully gave away over 400 fairtrade bananas to students and staff to contribute to the world record attempt. The promotion involved a mass poster campaign, including hundreds of card bananas and giant inflatables!”
