Alternative G20 conference shut down
Students at the University of East London were shocked today when an alternative G20 conference to be held close to the G20 was dramatically cancelled by University authorities.

The Union had invited a number of academics, writers, trade unionists and activists to allow students and the public to debate global justice, discussions unlikely to take place at the main G20 event just down the road at the ExCel centre.
The University and College Union said the event had been cancelled at the last minute because the university had withdrawn its backing to host it at UEL’s Docklands campus.
Joseph Bitrus, Student Union President, who has campaigned with People & Planet, said the altenative conference
gives students an opportunity to discuss and debate an alternative to what the leaders think. Students should be engaged in the global economy even outside of their academic life. Ordering the University to close because of the security risk is something I consider baloney. The University does not wish to be closed.. in a way it is oppression.”
