‘Fat Cats’ protest against Topshop
Cardiff P&P dressed as ‘fat cats’ as part of the Redress Fashion day of action last week to poke fun at billionaire Phillip Green, Topshop’s greedy fat cat owner and to protest against Topshop’s refusal to sign up to the Ethical Trading Initiative. The International Labour Day protest highlighted the struggles of garment workers in Topshop’s ‘sweatshop’ factories and called for customers to take action.
Some shoppers stopped to listen to the chants of the feline pack, while others read leaflets detailing Topshop’s practices and urging them to join in the day of action by calling Topshop’s complaints line.
Cardiff P&P Trade Justice Coordinator, Alice Hemming, complete with whiskers, yuppie suit and faux pot-belly said:
It was great to see so many shoppers supporting our campaign. Some even turned around and left the shop after reading our leaflets.
One of the highlights of the protest was the chant
Phillip Green, don’t be so mean, it’s time to make your clothing clean.
The group received good press coverage for the event from the BBC and ITV Wales among others.
