New Corporate Power Campaign seeks volunteers

Following on from the success of the Redress Fashion Working Group last year, we are forming two Corporate Power Working Groups to take the campaign forward this year. Would you like to be in one of them?

The Redress Fashion Working Group proved that P&P can do ‘real grassroots campaigning’ by including students in the running of the national campaign. This year the new Reclaim Education campaign will be launched in November at Shared Planet, but there’s lots to do before then! If you want to do something great for your CV and for P&P, and get training and experience in lots of essential campaigning skills, then join one of the Corporate Power Working Groups.

We are looking to form two different working groups.

  • All expenses are fully covered for volunteers, including for training. Volunteers are also recognised by gaining an accredited certificate after their service.

  • Both Working Groups will receive training.

  • A training session for the Campaign Advocates Working Group took place on Saturday June 27 at the Support Office in Oxford, the day before Summer Gathering.

  • Training for the Campaign Researchers Working Group took place on Saturday September 26 at the Support Office in Oxford.

If you’ve missed these dates email Jim, you can still be involved.

Campaign Advocates Working Group

If you want to campaign against corporate power, and would like to improve or gain skills in delivering workshops, media, communications, fundraising or action planning then join this group.

The role is called Campaign Advocate, but you can specialise in one or more of these skills as part of the working group, according to your experience and personal goals. We hope to get about seven people in the group, and we’ll meet fortnightly by Skype so we’ll support each other. This campaign will hit the ground running in November, but training will start in June. The group focusses on the Buy Right campaign.

Campaign Researchers Working Group

If your skills are more suited to a research role, then help us Reclaim Education by sniffing out the corporate influence in our universities. Who is funding your science, business or economics departments? Who sets their research agendas? What is the relationship between universities and corporations? How could we combat malign corporate influence? What models of funding might be better? Who can help us?

Be our super-sleuths and help us design, pilot and implement a nation-wide research programme to find out. Then we’ll use the information to inform how best to Reclaim Education from corporations and return higher education to serving public interest not private profit. We’ll also meet fortnightly, or less if fortnightly is unnecessary, by Skype. This group focusses on the Reclaim Research side of the campaign. You don’t need to be in P&P for this role, so please pass this on to your friends outside P&P.

For more details and how to express your interest in these roles go to our volunteering page or email Jim
