Last Friday, five students from City & Islington College, University of East London (UEL) and Bristol uni joined our Go Green intern Alys at a Youth Question Time event held by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC). As well as meeting Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband and Glenys Kinnock, Minister of State for Africa and the United Nations, everyone was amazed when Prime Minister Gordon Brown appeared as a special panel guest.

The Prime Minister admitted that climate change is “the greatest challenge we face as a world” , while Ed Miliband agreed with P&Per Cashael’s point that the UK has a huge climate debt to pay to countries in the global South who are already suffering the impacts of climate change. Both ministers said that the only way to make progress on climate change is through active involvement. They commended young people for standing up and taking action on such an important issue, which they likened to the fight for female suffrage, or the black civil rights movement.

Ed Miliband also announced that he would be recruiting Youth Advisors on climate change which will give young people across the UK the chance to have their say on what the government is doing to tackle this issue.
