For all those groups setting up allotments and transition food projects, here’s a really useful advice video from allotment expert Alys Fowler on the Guardian website. There’s plenty to do on the allotment in winter weather; from composting and weeding to planting garlic and setting up fruit bush canes and broad beans.

Students at Warwick University have set up ‘Greens Community Veg Garden’ with some land they’ve wangled off the Estates manager and are planning to produce organic veg for a box scheme.
In York, the P&P group has an established allotment and have just set up a low-carbon Food Co-op to help students access cheap, sustainable and seasonal food for ethical and local sources.
Scottish groups St. Andrews, Aberdeen and Edinburgh are all planning Transition Food projects such as food co-ops, Meat-Free Days and guerrila growing projects.
