10:10 - How to get your uni cutting 10% in 2010
Groups at both Edinburgh and York universities are pushing the 10:10 challenge - cutting emissions by 10% in a year to show just what's possible when everyone's at it!
Edinburgh University and York University Student Union (YUSU) are just two of thousands in the education sector who have signed up to 10:10. The national campaign has a simple and unifying message and is a key focus for this year’s Go Green Week:
“It’s simple. We all cut our carbon by 10% this year. You, me, that bloke walking his dog outside, your work, your kid’s school, the council, the church, the chip shop. Everyone.” 1010uk.org
Whilst Edinburgh University was one of the first to sign up last September, York University has yet to officially join the campaign. Members of People & Planet and the YUSU Environment and Ethics campaign have organised a petition to persuade their Vice Chancellor to sign up.
This week they’re holding a ‘10:10 at the Courtyard’ day - using a popular campus venue to mobilise mass support for their petition. Passers by will be able to:

Edinburgh 10:10 Extravaganza
Last week students from Edinburgh People & Planet helped their university launch their 10:10 initiative in style with a fundraising musical extravaganza. Group co-ordinator Ruth Cape described it as:
“A night of talented singers, musicians, swing dancers, quiz masters and even a cardboard-box double bass player made it great fun and a perfect way to get the 10:10 campaign on everybodys mind! Topped off with a homemade/charity shop raffle and a wee ceilidh… £150 was raised for People & Planet and everyone went home ready to do that bit more towards the 10%…”
