Eco-Cupids start Valentine's Day craze

Will Carbon Speed Dating be the new craze that sweeps the nation in 2010? Groups around the country are gearing up for low-carbon dating events this Go Green Week ( 8 - 14 Feb) and we've got some great eco chat-up resources to help you spread the love!

Carbon Speed Dating Chat up line

People & Planet have teamed up with 10:10 and the Guardian to try to make this a reality with Carbon Speed Dating. In an attempt to move beyond the usual suspects in Go Green Week 2010 (8 – 14 Feb) we’re encouraging groups to work together with their student unions or local night clubs to give these events mass appeal. The more cheesy the music the better for this one.

What’s Carbon Speed Dating?

“How does it work” we hear you asking? Well, in simple terms, it’s like any other speed dating event except people get matched by according to their carbon footprints for a series of quick dates. Amongst the usual drinking and sticky-floored clubnights, everyone will be searching for their Carbon ‘Sole’mate during Go Green Week. You’ll need some quiet space in the venue or even better a second room where the music can be turned down for 30 mins.

New stickers & resources

We’ve created some cheeky new ‘eco chat-up’ line stickers to give out at your events or during any club night during Go Green Week. You’ll also find everything else you need to run a Carbon Speed Dating event on our resources page

The idea and development of this event has come out of a series of Going Greener campaign workshops where People & Planet members were thinking about how to reach students who wouldn’t normally get involved in campaigning. As part of the club nights, we hope to get people to commit to cut their emissions by 10% in 2010 by signing up to 10:10.

What’s your carbon footprint going to be this year?

The Guardian have lent People & Planet their really simple and effective carbon calculator so students can register before the events and we may well get some coverage in G2 so make sure you let us know if you are going to run an event. Let us know by emailing goinggreener@peopleandplanet.org and put it up on the interactive map of Go Green Week events.
