People & Planet’s Management Committee (also known just as “the MC”) is the team of people who oversee all the work we do to make sure the organisation is working in the best interests of the network - that’s you.
The MC has a lot of responsibility for making sure People & Planet is fulfilling its aims: it approves People & Planet’s accounts and annual budgets, appoints the Director, and comments on and approves staff plans to ensure that the office is working on the best projects to support your campaigning.
This team is made up of democratically elected student members and non-student members who are chosen for their expertise.
The student members serve two years in the MC. If you’d like to work at the heart of People & Planet, we need you to nominate yourself to stand for the MC. We’re looking for applicants from schools, colleges and unis.
What happens next?
It’s really easy to nominate yourself, just fill out the online application and upload a video (don’t worry, it doesn’t need to be a professional election broadcast!) introducing yourself and why you’d like to stand. The deadline for applications is 12 March 2010.
You’ll then be invited to attend the Forum (19 – 21 March 2010) in London where you’ll get to meet other members of the network and tell them why you’d make a great MC member. Traditionally, MC elections have taken place at the Forum, but to make it more democratic (and involve more of the network), this year we’re holding the elections online.
We’ll be having an election launch party at the Forum and the online voting will take place over the following week 22-28 March.
If successful, you’ll be a fully-fledged member of the MC and join the team at four meetings each year with travel and expenses covered by People & Planet.
Ex MC member, Anne Marie said: “I would recommend it to anyone who wants to help shape the direction the organisation grows in. The fact that students have decision-making power for the organisation and that the network is run on democratic principles is one of the things that makes People & Planet so special. When I was on the MC we did a lot of work to try and extend the ways students could influence P&P’s direction and to develop political debate in the network so that we could make sure our campaigns and tactics were most effective. P&P is such a strong network that I think engaging in these questions is important for everyone involved.”
