The campaign to stop the funding of tar sands is gathering pace. Now, an ethical investment group are leading a campaign to get massive fund managers to stop big oil companies extracting tar sands.

Efforts to tackle climate change are under threat from decisions being made in the next few months. This Spring, massive fund manager Legal & General will have to decide whether or not to back tar sands.

You have the opportunity to influence their vote.

Tar sands are among the world’s dirtiest fuels: their extraction produces on average three times the greenhouse gases of conventional oil. The pollution, deforestation and wildlife disturbance associated with tar sands developments also threaten the traditional livelihoods and well-being of indigenous communities.

Resolutions at major oil company AGMs are already supported by some major investors but we need you to make your voice heard to help force a review of this damaging and risky activity. You can express your concerns by emailing one of the oil industry’s largest shareholders - it only takes a minute and has a real impact!

The resolutions on tar sands were filed by a large coalition of individual and institutional shareholders, co-ordinated by FairPensions and supported by environmental NGOs. FairPensions grew out of a highly successful People & Planet campaign in the late 1990s, which saw academics and students work together to transform the investment policy of the pension fund for lecturers.
