Naked week of action against sweatshops

Over 30 universities in the UK, US and Canada took part in the Week of Naked Action.

As part of the Buy Right campaign, students from over 30 universities told their universities this week that they would:

“rather go naked than wear sweatshop clothes”

Birmingham students do massive naked protest

Name an activity students usually do and you can pretty much guarantee that at some point this week, there were students doing it in the buff. This includes naked protests in front of student unions, naked pub trips, marches, exhibitions, T-shirt petitions and at Durham some brave souls even attended lectures in the nude!

The aim of all of this nudity is to persuade universities to join the Worker Rights Consortium, an independent organisation set up by students to monitor whether university suppliers are exploiting their workers. Student are using these naked protests to gather signatures for a petition and, to continue the naked theme, some groups are asking people to sign one of their naked protesters, who they will later present to their university’s Vice Chancellor.

The naked week of action looks set to have a big impact on the universities and is sure to spread the message to students and university staff alike that they have a responsibility to source their clothing ethically .

If your university is taking part in the week of naked action, make sure you take plenty of photos and email us and let us know what you’ve been up to.
