A new campaign, Part-Time Carnivore, has been launched today to encourage people to eat less meat.

New campaign launched by P&Per, Pete Davis

Long-time People & Planet activist and FAN Club member, Pete Davis, has just launched a new website that could prove to be a useful tool for convincing people to go for a greener diet.

Part-Time Carnivore asks people to commit to one of five meat-reducing options that are designed to suit different lifestyles: * Meat-Free Mondays * Vegging-Out * Meat-On/Meat-Off * Meating-Out * Meaty Sundays.

There is also a hidden Virtually Veggie option! Each option comes with estimated weekly savings of land and carbon emissions and the website keeps a running total for everyone who signs up. At the same time as cutting consumption, part-time carnivores are encouraged to swap intensively-reared and imported meat for the most natural and local meat they can afford.

Pete wrote in to tell us:

“It is incredibly important that students get the message about meat. For many of us, starting university is the first time we are fully in control of what we eat. It is vital that students don’t get into the bad habit of eating lots of cheap, intensively produced meat”

The campaign ties in closely with People & Planet’s Going Greener campaign which encourages students (and staff) to work together to make their universities more sustainable. Many have set up practical projects to reduce their emissions from food, for example by growing their own food on allotments, organising farmer’s markets on campus and teaching people how to cook tasty veggie food.
