New Campaign Theme Chosen!
People & Planet members have decided that the network should continue campaigning against climate change for at least another 5 years.
Students discusssing the three proposed campaigns at The Forum
After a lot of debate, deliberation and discussion, students at The Forum, People & Planet’s national decision making event, concluded that climate change remains the most pressing issue of our generation and one which the network cannot ignore.
Despite facing tough competition from proposals to return to campaigning on HIV and AIDS or start a new campaign `questioning consumerism’, students decided that to stop campaigning on climate change at such a crucial time wouldn’t be the right thing to do. After the failure of politicians to find a fair, global deal at Copenhagen, and the recent successes for People & Planet’s Ditch Dirty Development, Transition Universities and Go Green schools and colleges campaigns, it is more important than ever that young people keep up the pressure and take action on climate change to the next level. There will be a fresh approach however with new campaign strands to be chosen next year, your ideas could be one of them - look out for how to get involved.
The last ever national Forum was filled with some really important and inspiring discussions about the best ways for the People & Planet network to keep up its amazing work at the cutting edge of campaigning on issues of human rights, global poverty and the environment. However, students decided to replace this national event in favour of getting back to our roots and making key decisions at regional events. So, next year decision-making will be coming to a region near you.
The Forum also featured the glamorous, oscars-inspired launch of the online elections of the Management Committee. Voting closes on Monday 29 March so make sure you take a look at the nominees and make your choice soon! We really need as much of the network as possible to vote, as the Management Committee have an incredibly important role to play this year with lots of changes planned for People & Planet. Why not take a laptop along to your next meeting and get everyone in your group to vote there and then?
Check out the photo gallery below for the first pictures of a brilliant event. Thanks to all who came along and contributed to student democracy in action!
