Edinburgh students tell RBS to ditch dirty tar sands

As the RBS Week of Action approaches, People & Planet student groups across the South of England & Wales are planning actions demanding that the Treasury stop RBS backing tar sands companies. Meanwhile, groups from the North and Scotland are going to Edinburgh for the RBS AGM protest and an alternative ‘Public Shareholders Meeting’ (Because it’s our bank now).

The Edinburgh protest will see students dressed as shareholders, in suits and their smartest clothes, carrying placards and banners calling on the post-election Government to stop RBS backing tar sands blood oil. It will then be followed by a “Public Shareholders’ Meeting - because it’s our bank now” co-organised by People & Planet, World Development Movement Scotland, Friends of the Earth Scotland, Amnesty International Scotland, Scottish Education and Actions for Development, and PLATFORM.

Both the official AGM and the Shareholders General Meeting will be attended by First Nation Canadian activists leading campaigns against tar sands in their homelands.

Come to Edinburgh

Book your train ticket to Edinburgh now if you’d like to take part. The protest starts at 1pm, and it’ll take 5-10 mins to walk from Haymarket station (or about 25 from Waverley). When booking your ticket, you are better going to “Edinburgh Haymarket” than “Edinburgh” (also called “Waverley”), though they are only a mile apart, so either is fine.

If you are going to Edinburgh and want crashpad accommodation with People & Planet members there, contact the ever-awesome Edinburgh organiser Daniel Abrahams (see bottom left hand in the photo): daniel_abrahams ‘at’ hotmail.co.uk or ring the P&P office on 01865245678 and ask for Dan Key or Adam Ramsay.

To get involved in planning for the AGM, or to find out about any actions in your area, join our Skype call on Tuesday 13 April, 6pm.
