People & Planet’s innovative Further Education programme has reached the final stage of the judging. The programme, which introduces young people to global issues and then supports them to create exciting sustainability projects, was shortlisted from among 700 candidates.

One student from City & Islington College, who took part in the project, said

“The experience has left me feeling very empowered and I would strongly recommend it. I had not had such a fun learning experience in a long time”.

The project has already won plaudits from the respected Institute of Education which commented

“a key success of the engagement with students has also been the high level of engagement from students from Black and Ethnic minorities … [which] demonstrates an interest in the issues that challenges some of the stereotypes that exist about public interest in international development”.

“Smaller charities are too often overshadowed by the big players. Even though small is very often beautiful in terms of innovation, flexibility and reach into communities, it’s invariably the multi-million-pound household names of the voluntary sector that grab the limelight. The Guardian Charity Awards seek to redress that.”

The five winners of the Guardian Charity Awards 2010 will be announced in December 2010, with prizes including substantial financial support, resources and training.
