The Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges have recognised the work of People & Planet by shortlisting them for a prestigous Green Gown Award. People & Planet and Croydon College have been nominated in the skills category for their ground-breaking sustainable construction project.
Over a 5 week period People & Planet worked with foundation construction students to explore the importance of environmental issues in their industry. The students got the chance to learn the practical applications of green technology, such as solar panels and water saving devices like ‘champagne taps’. Through this practical work students discovered that saving the planet can save you money and that getting to grips with sustainability can make you more employable.
The students also had the opportunity to visit low impact housing schemes and develop their own projects in groups. At the end of the 5 weeks each group presented their ideas to the VIP Green Dragons as part of a ‘Green Dragons Den’ where two projects were awarded £1000 each for further development.
The project was rated good or excellent by 90% of the students, with staff also praising People & Planet for their work.
’ this project has made {the group} realise that they can do something that they never thought possible’
