Will the UK oppose tar sands ban? Take action
The UK is planning to oppose EU legislation that would effectively ban tar sands from Europe on 2 December. Tell Transport Minister Norman Baker to support the Fuel Quality Directive.
Liberal Democrat ‘environmentalist’ Norman Baker MP
Norman Baker, Under Secretary of State for Transport and long-time environmentalist, is opposing proposed EU climate change legislation that would effectively ban European imports of tar sands oil due to its extremely high greenhouse gas emissions.
This follows many months of unprecedented lobbying from the Canadian Government to stall crucial climate legislation on the pretence that tar sands have been unfairly ‘singled out’. This claim has been repeatedly debunked, as the Fuel Quality Directive includes a range of other high-polluting fuels (such as shale gas and liquid coal) that the EU has recognised also undermine their commitments to a 6% reduction in transport-related emissions by 2020.
The UK Government has a simple choice to make. Does it support a low-carbon European economy and cleaner fuels? Or does it favour Canadian trade interests, dirty oil and runaway climate change?
