With only one day before the EU vote on the Fuel Quality Directive - legislation that would effectively ban tar sands oil from Europe, but which the UK has repeatedly opposed - People & Planet activists in Sheffield covered themselves in treacle outside of the Deputy Prime Minister’s constituency office, to highlight the need to close the EU’s doors to dirty oil.
A statement from the group read:
“People & Planet Sheffield are demonstrating outside Nick Clegg’s office because we are asking him to vote for a cleaner, greener future on Thursday 23 February. Thursday will see a vote on a proposal to ban tar sands oil from the EU on the grounds that it is too polluting and cannot help European countries meet their carbon reduction targets. A ‘yes’ vote to the ban will send a clear message that the UK government is willing to stand up for the interests of present and future generations and to protect the environment.”
The stunt has been part of a series of actions and events that People & Planet has co-ordinated recently as part of the Tar Sands-Free campaign, to raise pressure on the UK government to take an ethical stance on the Fuel Quality Directive this week.
If you haven’t already, send an email to Nick Clegg and Norman Baker MP, telling them to keep tar sands oil out of Europe.
