UWE P&Per Cycles to Shared Planet '05!

If you found Shared Planet 2005 an exhausting experience, spare a thought for Bryn from UWE P&P who cycled there and back from Bristol!

This is his first year being involved with P&P and when Shared planet was first mentioned at a group meeting, the thought of cycling up to Oxford popped into his head immediately! The journey is 85 miles each way, and a whole days worth of cycling, but after a few practice 15 mile runs to Bath it seemed that the distance could be covered relatively comfortably! What’s more, is that he raised a brilliant £150 in sponsorship for People & Planet by doing his cycle ride!

Here is what Bryn said of his experience:

“I set off on Friday at 8.30 a.m and everything went smoothly and managed to make it to the midway point, Cricklade by 1p.m. for lunch. The going wasn’t so smooth after lunch, as the dual carriageway in the high wind was quite uncomfortable! A few hours later darkness and rain came together making the last 10 miles up the A40 into Oxford no fun at all. I Made it to a relatives house in Oxford by 5.30 p.m, just in time for tea! For the most part however, the ride was a really pleasurable experience. Had a fantastic time at the event, highlights being the speech by Caroline Lucas (MEP) and the samba band at the party!”

So why cycle to Shared Planet?

Seems like a lot of hard work for an already action packed and exhausting weekend! But Bryn’s reasons for cycling make great sense! In true P&P spirit what better way to…

  • avoid unneccesary carbon emissions,
  • raise awareness of how bikes are a great and practical means of transport,
  • whilst also raising cash for a good cause!!

Join in the mobilisation to the next Shared Planet!

Bryn has shown that its possible to cycle to Shared Planet, and is keen to encourage other P&Pers to join him in cycling to the next one in November! Any ideas of how to make this possible, or if you want to be involved in organising or taking part in a country-wide convoy of cyclists, why not email us.
