Taking on Tarmageddon, a Campbell Road Production film about People & Planet’s tar sands youth exchange with the Beaver Lake Cree Nation in 2011, will be screened for the first time at the Amnesty International Human Rights Action Centre in Shoreditch, East London next Tuesday (February 21), 2 days before the EU votes on banning tar sands from Europe.
So far, the UK has sided with the Canadian Government and oil industry, opposing the Fuel Quality Directive (FQD), on grounds that the European Commission and countless NGOs have repeatedly debunked. Norman Baker MP, the Minister responsible for the Government’s position on the FQD, has been invited to speak at the launch.
Taking on Tarmageddon weaves together the stories of a global environmental movement and a local indigenous community’s fight against big oil, through the stories of individuals involved at every level, against a backdrop of an industrial wasteland the size of England and Wales.
