Princethorpe College Looks Good for Fairtrade

Students at Princethorpe College wowed the school with their Fairtrade fashion show yesterday

The students, who were inspired after having a People & Planet workshop at their school, decided to organise an event to raise awareness of the need for Fairtrade sports kits and school uniforms. To reach as many people as possible, the group decided to perform the fashion show in assembly for a whole week.

People & Planet went along to the first fashion show yesterday. Taking place in a sixth form assembly, the pews (yes, it took place in the college chapel) were full as the audience awaited the exciting show.

Kate Thorogood (a sixth former at the college) and Miss Allen (Head of Sixth Form) were the main organisers of the event. Kate successfully gathered a group of volunteers to model the clothes, and Miss Allen made sure the chapel was decorated and ready for the catwalk collection.

Kate (17) said: “The fashion show is the perfect way to raise awareness of Fairtrade cotton and have fun. I always try to buy Fairtrade, and think it’s something immediate and positive that people can do to alleviate the problems caused by unfairly traded produce. I’ve learnt a lot while planning the fashion show, and even though it’s a small event, I hope it will stimulate some serious thought about our levels of responsibility towards others.”

Kate was keen to ensure that the serious message behind the fashion show didn’t get lost in the excitement. She prepared a PowerPoint presentation and a five minute talk which she gave at the beginning. The talk was great, really inspiring and it certainly got people thinking about Fairtrade.

After the talk, it was time for the fashion show. Models strutted onto the catwalk, as music blared and the stage lights shone. The Annie Greenabelle fairtrade collection looked amazing, and the models had choreographed their routine to perfection. The models proved that Fairtrade clothes can be fashionable as well as fair.

A local designer donated some evening gowns to showcase at the fashion show. The girls looked great and seemed to enjoy being on the catwalk.

To bring the message home again, the fashion show ended with a video about Fairtrade to remind pupils about the importance of the event. The event was fantastic and definitely raised a lot of awareness and hopefully inspired people to campaign for Fairtrade at Princethorpe College.
