Saturday 12 November

10 - 10:45 Shared Planet begins! After a welcome from Oxford’s Lord Mayor, we kicked off with Firoze Manji, former Amnesty International Programme Director who inspired us all with talk of the Arab uprising.

Campaign Sessions:

10:45 - 12:15 Students got tips as to how to get their university Going Greener and Tar Sands-free by taking part in our Climate Change sessions.

12:15 - 13:15 Lunch!

13:15 - 14:45 Students got ready to fight for workers rights at their school, college or university by joining theCorporate Power sessions. They came away feeling inspired, knowledgeable and ready to take action.

14:45 - 15:15 Break

Workshops and debates:

15:15 - 16:15 Students got to chose between 15 workshops relating to social and environmental justice run by leading NGOs.

16:15 - 17:15 “Student Activism and the future of protest!” An interactive panel debate chaired by UEA People & Planet’s Anna Tomson and featured speakers from National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts, veteran campaigner Peter Tatchell, Robin Parker from NUS and Egyptian revolutionary Hannah Elsisi.

17:45 - 19:00 A mix of workshops, debates and practical sessions! We had debates on tax justice, workshops on GM food and activist and foodie tours of Oxford.

Party!

20:00 - midnight The party was held at the East Oxford Community Centre and featured live music, t-shirt making and a chill-out area.

Opening Plenary

10:30 - 11:20 We had a moving opening morning with speeches from indigenous tar sands campaigners and award-winning activist Lauren King about the most destructive project in the world and how to make our universities Tar Sands-free.

11:30 - 16:00 Students proposed the topics that they wanted to talk about and had a lively and jam-packed open space session

This session also saw a special practical session on the OxGrow allotment with veg-guru & BBC presenter Alys Fowler

16:00 - 17:00 Robin Ince, host of radio show The Infinite Monkey Cage, is perhaps Britain’s best comedian. He was the closing speaker of Shared Planet 2011!
