Meetings
Meetings are a forum for people to come together, share ideas and plan for change. Since they are by far the best way to plan and work out who’s doing what, it’s worth trying to get them right!
Simple ideas such as planning an agenda, playing a game at the start and having a break will work wonders.
You should think about:
- Making new people feel welcome
- Being inclusive so that everyone’s voice is heard
- Keeping it upbeat (we’ve all been at boring meetings)
- Getting agreement to move forward

Roles
Getting people in your group to take on areas of responsibility will spread the work and allow you to gain specific skills.
But don’t assume you can just delegate titles such as ‘secretary’ or ‘treasurer’. Its more important for people to actively participate, than to take on specific titles. People will be more likely to take on roles if they’ve had a hand in the decision-making of the group and its easier to ask someone to work on a project if it was partly their idea.
The same few people can’t take on all the work of an active group and stay effective, even if they like feeling indispensable. So it’s worth thinking about the best ways to get people to take on responsibility.
