Empowered and Motivated
Case study- Westcliffe School for Girls
Following some excellent campaigning, the Fairtrade group at Westcliffe School for Girls in Essex were invited to a town council meeting about Fairtrade. They used their vote to demonstrate their support for making Southend a Fairtrade town and will be getting involved in the Fairtrade town campaign in the future.
Empowered
One of the main aims of People & Planet as an organisation is to empower students to take a lead. While P&P staff and your teachers can help you, the emphasis is on you to take action. The result will be that throughout your life you should have the confidence and ability to change things which you think are wrong.
Case study- Cotswold P&P
Don’t be disheartened if you don’t have many members. Some groups with one or two members have achieved great things. Cotswold P&P had one dedicated member, who made sure that a series of workshops were to be booked at the school to help with recruitment. All groups can book these and these should help you to grow.
Motivated
It can be easy to become disheartened or loose interest if your campaigns are running out of steam, so its worth thinking about keeping your group motivated. Here are some tips:
Make sure you remind yourselves why you’re campaigning! It’s important to encourage each other and keep each other posted of success stories you hear.
Send a quick email round after an action to say, “we were great!”. This is as important as all the planning before it.
P&P events - meeting with hundreds of campaigners and hearing great speakers - are really inspiring places to be.
