Sustainable in the long term

Case Study- Arthur Mellows Village College

Arthur Mellows Village College P&P group’s Fairtrade campaign has been running for two years now. Their hard work has just been rewarded with Fairtrade Status for their school which ensures the school will continue its commitment to Fairtrade when they leave! The group have also done a brilliant handover to some new members so that all their hard work can continue even after they move on to new things. They collected names and contact details of interested people and sent them into the support office. They held handover meetings at which Year 12s took on roles which had been vacated in the group and ensured the new members had the skills to continue campaigning by booking a Campaign and Action Planning workshop from their support staff in the P&P office.

Leave a legacy

Your P&P group doesn’t have to break-up when you leave. You can take a few steps to make sure that you leave a legacy of campaigning in your Sixth Form.

Its a common problem that a group is really strong one year, then all but folds when the Year 13s leave. So long as you watch for it, that problem is easy to avoid:

  • Book a workshop early in the year for new members to get involved.
  • Share out responsibilities - make sure newer people get the chance to pick up skills on the job. Quite often it takes longer to let someone new have a go, but it’s worth it.
  • Make sure the support office have the contact details for the new group members.
  • Have a skillshare session, and formally pass on your skills and knowledge to others.
  • Keep a handover file - you could make notes of lessons learnt during the year.
  • If people are interested get them involved straight away and consult them for advice.
