Newbold People & Planet (P&P) group put pressure on their school to adopt a Fairtrade policy with a Fairtrade football tournament

The Sixth Form campaigners will draw attention to the effect unfair trade is having on producers in the developing world, by running a football tournament using exclusively Fairtrade footballs. The footballs have been sourced from a factory in Pakistan which adheres to the strict Fairtrade guidelines. The factory pays a fair and guaranteed wage to the workers, and supplements this with a premium for community projects. Child labour is outlawed and high environmental and health and safety standards have been put in place.

The tournament follows the P&P group’s year-long campaign for Fairtrade to be used across the school. They have got Fairtrade tea and coffee stocked in the school canteen, and want to extend the range to all products sourced by the school. They are calling on the school to adopt a Fairtrade policy.

Newbold P&P spokesperson, Robert Slinn, said:

“The school has taken positive action to get Fairtrade stocked in the canteen. Now it must make sure that all of its products meet these high standards. We are calling on the school to source all of its products from ethical sources and adopt a policy for the long term.”

Newbold P&P co-ordinator, Kiran Nihalani, said:

“It is too easy to take for granted where these things we use everyday come from. The school has taken the step of getting Fairtrade tea and coffee. Now it must extend this range to other products such as sports equipment by adopting a Fairtrade policy.”
