Autumn 2007 Climate Change Bill introduced to Parliament
In 2006, on the eve of critical international climate change talks in Nairobi, People & Planet groups mounted a massive campaign lobbying for the introduction of a Climate Bill in the Queen’s Speech.
Groups met their MPs, held public meetings, and marched in the Carnival of Climate Chaos. We even had an hour long meeting with the Prime Minister, Tony Blair. It’s all this hard campaigning that has helped us get so far. In November 2006 the Government announced they would introduce a Climate Change Bill, the first draft of which was published in March 2007.
To get a Climate Bill with teeth — a Climate Bill that lowers the UK’s CO₂ emissions by the 80% needed to avoid dangerous climate change — we need to build on the incredibly successful campaigning we’ve done so far. We need to make sure that we feed into the consultation with good suggestions to make the Bill as effective as possible, before it becomes law.
