Take Action to Stop Climate Chaos

Without urgent action, climate change will devastate life on earth. Hundreds of millions of people, particularly the world’s poorest and most vulnerable, are at severe risk of drought, floods, starvation, and disease. Up to one third of land-based species could face extinction by the middle of the century.

But it’s not all bad news. If we act now, it is possible to stop climate chaos. It’s up to us to choose to take action. By campaigning together, we can stop climate chaos.

Act Now

Below are the actions which you can take with People & Planet.

Ditch Dirty Development

We need to end our reliance on fossil fuels and start investing in climate friendly solutions, in particular renewable energy. But at the moment billions more is invested in new fossil fuel extraction than in renewables.

Private banks like the Royal Bank of Scotland (which owns Natwest) use your money to invest in climate changing coal, oil and gas. The UK Government is currently using taxpayers money to support oil and gas extraction projects around the world, mainly through the World Bank. People & Planet is campaigning for an end to investment in dirty development and for a transition to a low carbon future.

Go Green

Britain’s universities, colleges and schools have a huge environmental impact - one that could and should be massively reduced. The UK Higher Education (HE) sector emits 3 million tonnes of CO₂ into the atmosphere every year, and is responsible for over 1 million journeys daily. Schools emit 9.3 million tonnes of CO₂ per year, and that’s not counting the 1.2 million tonnes of CO₂ emitted by people traveling to school by car.

That’s why People & Planet groups at schools, colleges and universities around the country are part of the Go Green campaign to get their institutions to take climate change seriously and systematically improve their environmental performance.

Stop Kingsnorth - No new coal

No New Coal - No Kingsnorth

As soon as Mid-April John Hutton MP the Minister for DBERR (Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform) may decide if Kingsnorth in Kent will see the first new coal-fired power station in the UK for decades.

This should be ringing alarm bells for anyone concerned about climate change because burning coal is the biggest threat to the climate and in the UK would wipe out any progress in cutting greenhouse gas emissions since 1998.

Strengthening the Climate Change Bill

Action Expired - November 2008

A lords amendment to the Climate Change Bill, calling for a cap on the amount of internationally tradable carbon credits, has successfully been passed. The admendment will ensure that the UK plays it’s part in stopping climate chaos and it’s due to pressure from P&Pers that this amendment has passed.

Step it Up @ Bali

Footprints in the sand

Action Expired - December 2007

In December Politicians from across the world met in Bali, Indonesia, for a UN Climate Change Conference. We demanded that our leaders come home from Bali with more than just a suntan, they must achieve steps towards a binding international agreement for urgent action to stop climate chaos.

Climate Change Bill

Action Expired - November 2007

In November 2006 the UK Government announced that they would pass a Climate Change Bill, creating a legal framework for long term cuts in carbon emissions. This is an amazing step forward, but we still need to make sure that the Bill is strong enough to make the cuts needed to ensure we avoid dangerous climate change.
