Schools need to be at the heart of a low-carbon society. They play a central role in preparing the next generation for the challenges that face our world and creating a cleaner, greener economy. The coalition Government framed itself as the ‘greenest’ government ever but is planning to end support for schools in teaching sustainability issues.
Now is the time to increase young people’s understanding of environmental, economic and community needs, not the time to drop programmes which support it.
The Sustainable Schools programme has been shown to raise standards and enhance well-being. With schools producing over a fifth of all public sector greenhouse emissions, tackling emissions from schools would not only help avert climate change, it could also save millions in public spending.
Help save Sustainable Schools:
Tell the Government’s Education Minister how important it is that young people are supported in tackling the challenges of the future.

Save our sustainable schools
Dear Secretary of State for Education
School students are our future, and if we want a sustainable, low-carbon future we need the government to support schools in teaching these issues. A truly green government would put sustainability teaching at the heart of its education strategy.
I call on you to:
ensure that the government creates the opportunities for all students to learn about sustainability issues
provide all schools with access to resources and education which supports them in becoming truly sustainable schools.
Yours
