The prestigious London School of Economics is playing host to Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, Joe Oliver, speaking unchallenged on Thursday about the supposed benefits of the most destructive project on Earth – the Alberta tar sands.

Speaking on CBC TV in Canada, Oliver was quoted as saying:

“[tar sands] land is uninhabitable… uh… by human beings. So, you know, no community is being disrupted”.

This is a bold-faced lie and an insult to the thousands of First Nations communities whose lives are being disrupted every day by an industry that is destroying their traditional ways of life.

Oliver has also vowed to fight the EU’s Fuel Quality Directive which is in the process of banning tar sands oil from Europe due to its massive carbon emissions, after significant pressure from our campaign coalition.

The LSE People & Planet group and the UK Tar Sands Network will be at LSE on Thursday to ‘welcome’ the Minister and let him know that his tar sands propaganda is not welcome here, nor can the LSE give uncontested space to such perspectives in the name of public education.
