A record-breaking success!
Congratulations to everyone who took part in the 24 Hours for Trade Justice event on 27-28th June - the weekend was a record-breaking success! Organised by members of the Trade Justice Movement, 24 Hours for Trade Justice aimed to raise the profile of our campaign and push trade further up the political agenda. And it did just that!
Among the highlights:
- Over 500 MPs were lobbied in their local constituencies - that’s over three-quarters of Parliament and the biggest mass lobby ever seen in the UK!
- Hundreds of local events involving thousands of campaigners took place across the UK
- Bono sent a message of support on Saturday, to say: ‘The Trade Justice Movement is putting politicians to the test - millions of African’s livelihoods depend on their response.’
- There was huge national, regional and local press coverage
- P&Pers at Glastonbury dressed up as fat cats, fairtrade fairies and a ferocious free trade monster and joined with other Trade Justice campaigners to parade through the site. Festival-goers sent thousands of faxes to MPs from the Trade Justice tent, and headliners Radiohead supported the campaign
- Trade Secretary Patricia Hewitt took part in an ‘unfair’ game in her local constituency. Having been given the role of Mozambique with the game’s rules weighted against her, the UK’s Trade Secretary resorted to cheating in order to make sure she still won…
- And by an amazing co-incidence, a horse named ‘Trade Fair’ won a race at Newmarket on Saturday afternoon!
