College Vegetable Plot and Wormery

1

by Julien Pritchard

Students at Angus College have been designing and digging a vegetable plot as part of their landscape gardening course. The project also includes a wormery and is involving students from a range of college courses.

This project was one of the winning entries to People & Planet's Green Dragon's Den competition and was awarded £300 by People & Planet. It has been a great way to engage students from across the college in sustainability issues and in giving students practical skills and experience.

Students are designing and digging a vegetable plot, initially for growing food produce for the college catering courses, however due to demand, the scope has been expanded to growing veg for staff and students.

Students and staff from across the college are being encouraged to participate and grow their own veg.  In their enterprise class students are designing a website and writing recipe books, joinery students are designing the wormery, and the nursery children are looking forward to getting their hands dirty!

Those involved in the project are hoping to be able to sell vegetable packs for Sunday roasts within a year.
