Step 2: Change your school
Get your school to wear fair!
Your school principal can change the policy of where your uniforms and sports kits are bought from. Sometimes you can get your voice heard through a staff-student council or committee, or a Fairtrade Steering Group.
Once you have gained support from other students you can make a presentation to the school principal asking them to change your school to Fairtrade cotton uniforms and sports kits.
You can tell them..
- How the college clothing industry is exploiting poverty stricken cotton farmers.
- How Fairtrade prevents this exploitation and gives cotton farmers a fair deal.
- The awareness raising work you’ve done in college and present them with your petition.
This may sound scary but don’t worry! Chances are the principal will be very nice and interested in what you have to say. This is also a great way to build your skills and confidence in presentation.

What next?
If your school agrees to change its policy it is important to get their promises written down. We have designed a sample policy for you to download which you can show to your school governors and they can use as a template for their own.
