What is Go Green Week?

Go Green Week is an annual student week of action on climate change. People & Planet groups in schools, colleges and universities put together a week of actions, events and fundraisers to raise awareness of the issue of climate change and to lobby their own institutions to cut the carbon and Go Green.

Go Green Week 2009 was the biggest yet with around 70 People & Planet groups in schools, colleges and universities putting on an extravaganza of fantastic actions, events and fundraisers. Check out some of the highlights from Go Green Week 2009.

Go Green Weeks have been hugely successful in the past. They provide an excellent focus for local Go Green campaigns by putting extra pressure on decision makers whilst bringing in new people who are interested in campaigning for their school, college or uni to Go Green.

Groups across the country highlight the serious and catastrophic consequences that climate chaos is already having on the world’s most vulnerable people and the future threat that it poses to all of us. The aim of the week is to create extra pressure for positive solutions to help avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

Groups raise awareness of the huge negative impact that our schools, colleges and universities are having on the climate. These institutions are emitting 12.3 million tonnes of CO2 every year and this doesn’t include the millions more emitted by people travelling to and from them. Schools alone account for 15% of all public sector emissions whilst universities own 9% of all office space in the UK.

During Go Green Week, groups reduce the carbon emissions of their institutions while raising awareness of climate change and the impact their institution is having upon it amongst other students, staff, heads and the general public.

We hope all People & Planet groups can play some part during this week (no matter how small) to create a whirlwind of energy. New resources for Go Green Week 2010 will be uploaded and sent out to all groups campaigning to Go Green in January 2010.
