Section 1. Environmental Sustainability; Policy and Strategy

50%

The full methodology for this section can be found here.

We looked at Buckinghamshire New University's publicly available environmental policy - you can read it here if we found one:

bucks.ac.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0010/13240/Environmental-Policy.pdf

We wanted to see that the policy wasn't just sitting in a dusty desktop year after year and we needed to know that the policy meant something to staff, students and decision makers at the university. So to score 50% here, the policy needed to have been published within the last 5 years and demonstrate that it was reviewed regularly by someone sitting in a senior position at the university (because if the university is failing to uphold their policy, then someone should know about it ..... and be able to do something about it).

1) Buckinghamshire New University scored: 50 / 50% for their environmental policy

Next we looked at whether the policy was accompanied with a plan for action or Sustainability Strategy, you can read it here if we one found one:

bucks.ac.uk/content/documents/Campus_Environment/707856/Environmental_Policy

The university could only score 50% if they had set SMART targets in all 8 of key areas below, and if we could see that the strategy had been reviewed in the last 5 years, (much like the environmental policy, a strategy only works if people are using it), and we didn't give credit for strategies that were out of date:

  • Construction & Refurbishment
  • Emissions & Discharges
  • Community involvement
  • Biodiversity
  • Waste management
  • Travel and Transport
  • Sustainable procurement
  • Water

We found that Buckinghamshire New University is working towards targets in the following areas:

Construction and Refurbishment

Therefore...

2) Buckinghamshire New University scored 0 / 50% for their sustainability strategy.

---Below is the text your uni submitted last year. It might not still be relevant/true/up to date, and is only included here for your convenience. It is your responsibility to edit/remove/update it for an accurate submission this year. Please also delete this note.--- Buckinghamshire New University achieved [Carbon Trust](www.carbontrust.com/) Standard in 2011 in recognition of measuring, managing and reducing its carbon emissions. The University achieved a **5% reduction in its carbon footprint** over the three year assessment period due, in part, to a campus consolidation and redevelopment, which included the disposal of old, inefficient sites and substantial refurbishment and new building works at the High Wycombe and Uxbridge Campuses. The University is well on its way to achieving its target to **reduce CO2 emissions by 50% by 2020** (based on a baseline of 2005 emissions). From 2005 we have acheived a 41% reduction in our carbon emissions. The University sees the Carbon Trust accreditation as acknowledgement of its achievements to date and its commitment to reducing carbon emissions each year. Buck Students’ Union has recently established a **Green Society**, which is supported by the University and encourages students to be more environmentally friendly. The University is also galvanising staff and students through its **Sustainability Committee** which boasts representatives from across the University and working groups looking at issues such as **waste management, travel management and greening the curriculum**. It is also reviewing some of the suppliers to see where more energy savings can be made over time. The University is working hard to encourage students and staff to become more energy aware through a number of initiatives; **including stickers on power points** to encourage users to switch the power off when it’s not needed, and a **25 square metre green-themed mural** which greets visitors to the High Wycombe Campus.
