Goldsmiths Students’ Union has voted to boycott fossil fuel recruiters as part of the student-led Fossil Free Careers campaign. The campaign, coordinated by student-led campaigning charity People & Planet, demands UK universities end oil, gas and mining industry recruitment on campus.

As the result of a student union motion, Goldsmiths Students’ Union will no longer allow oil, gas or mining companies to attend events in its venues or to receive any endorsement from the Union. The Students’ Union is now also mandated to actively campaign for Goldsmiths Careers Department to implement an Ethical Careers Policy that excludes oil, gas and mining companies from recruiting on campus.

To date, Fossil Free Careers has seen 13 students’ unions pass similar motions, with 3 universities fully committing to exclude oil, gas and mining recruitment from their careers departments. Now, with the backing of Goldsmiths Students’ Union, attention is turning to the university’s Careers Department to commit to Fossil Free Careers and end extractive industry recruitment on campus.

Fergus Green, Climate Justice Officer at People & Planet, said:

The fossil fuel industry is more responsible than any other for the climate and ecological crisis. So it’s wonderful to see Goldsmiths Students’ Union join the snowballing student movement holding them to account. Students across the UK are united in our demand: We want the oil, gas, and mining industry kicked out of our university careers services
