Indifference and cruelty along increasingly militarised borders. Negligence and abuse in detention centres with horrific conditions. Families ripped apart by midnight deportation flights. Facial recognition, fingerprinting and intrusive searches of mobile phones.
People who move are subjected to degrading treatment at every stage of their journey. This is not a failure of the system – it is the system - hostile, racist and violent by design. And our university is complicit.
Universities across the UK have over £300 million invested in the private companies who carry out this violence for profit on behalf of the home office. As students and academics we expect our institutions to combat injustice, not fund and legitimise it.
Therefore, in solidarity with those on the frontlines resisting the hostile environment, we are demanding that our university break ties with all companies implicated in the detention, deportation, surveillance or persecution of migrants.
